About theraPTeutic alliance
In 2016, Jim Heafner posted a blog article which he wrote to the Doctor of Physical Therapy students Facebook page. Within minutes, someone tagged Jarod Hall in the post. That evening, Jarod commented on the post. He frankly stated how Jim's post was inaccurate because it focused too heavily on anatomy as the sole cause of pain and didn't consider deeper factors that may play a role in the complex experience of pain.
At that point, Jim and Jarod had never met or had any direct interaction. Jim's initial reaction to Jarod's comment was anger (and fear) because he had seen Jarod's strong social media presence and straightforward (maybe a bit aggressive) communication habits. There was subsequent dialogue between the two about pain, research, patient presentations, and their differing thought processes. Within days, the post conversation stops, but Jim's underlying dislike for Jarod continued.
Fast forward 4 months to CSM 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. Jim walks into his hotel room only to find his 3rd roommate for the weekend is none other than Jarod Hall. Jim sees Jarod sitting on the couch and immediately feels less than comfortable considering their history and disagreements online. However, within minutes, the two are talking all things physical therapy. Apologies were exchanged on both sides of the table about their online miscommunication. It left them both confused why months of frustration and dislike existed between the two. Within a few more months, Jim and Jarod are working together spearheading large projects such as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist prep program and Making Sense of Pain.
Through this story, we quickly learn the power of language, communication, miscommunication, and how our reactions can directly determine our outcomes. Making Sense of Pain takes on this topic full force by deeply examining the power of language and providing readers with clear and concise stories to better understand complex topics without getting lost in translation.
